Ring of Brodgar

The Ring of Brodgar was built around 5,000 years ago, and originally consisted of some 60 stones, 36 of which still stand in the ring today. The stone circle is surrounded by a large rock-cut ditch and, needless to say, is one of the major tourist attractions on mainland Orkney.

I managed to visit it twice while on Orkney last year, once in the afternoon and again just after sunrise. Approaching the stones was not possible on my visit, unfortunately, but it was fascinating to wander around the ring.

I would love to get back there sometime.
